“WHY SOLO TRAVEL IS OVER- ROMANTICISED

AND WHY I DID IT ANYWAY

“Traveling solo is a dream that is sold to us every day on social media. Sunsets. Beaches. Mountains. But behind every post, there’s also exhaustion, self-doubt, loneliness, and fear. And that’s okay. This is my real story of solo travel- both the magic and the mess.”

‘Sometimes the scariest choices turn out to be the most beautiful ones.’

IN 2023, I did something I never thought possible: I packed my suitcase and flew alone to Thailand – my first-ever solo trip without family, surrounded by a bunch of strangers. It wasn’t just a vacation. It was where I was presenting my scientific poster for the first time.

“The hardest part wasn’t the trip. It was convincing my parents.”

Let’s be honest: girls aren’t always encouraged to fly across countries alone, especially in families where safety and traditions weigh heavily. And Thailand is not the best choice for the first time. But when the opportunity for the conference came, my heart said “go”.

Of course, soon after, my brain followed. What if something happens? Who would be there? Why alone? You don’t even know Thai?

I fought for this. Not with anger, but with love, clarity, and logic.. I promised responsibility and safety. After what felt like an eternity, they said yes.

To every girl reading this: Sometimes the hardest battle is getting that yes. But it’s worth fighting for.

“Travelling is a little oversold.”

Travelling is a high that gives you the feeling that you have escaped your inner struggles. But like any drug, its effect wears off soon. Traveling can provide a fresh perspective, but it’s only you who has the power to change your life.

I still remember the moment I stepped onto the plane- excitement and nervousness buzzing in my chest. Like in FINAL DESTINATION, my brain showed me all the scenarios where I was doomed. I felt lost and questioned my life choices a million times.

“WHY I STILL DID IT”

I needed to prove to myself that I am enough. This felt like my best bet at the independence I craved. Thailand is a beautiful country with night markets, temples, beaches, and cafes.

This trip had lots of firsts – first international trip, first solo trip, first scientific presentation, first time on a beach, first time on a yacht, first time snorkeling. I met a version of myself I always craved to be – brave, free and alive.

DEAR GIRLS: THIS IS YOUR SIGN TO GO

If you are waiting for someone to go with- don’t.

If you are waiting for permission – give it to yourself.

If you are scared – that’s normal human instinct. Be scared , and go anyway.

Start small. Plan smartly and carefully. Stay safe . BUT PLEASE GO!

AND TO PARENTS READING THIS:

Trust your daughters . Equip them with wisdom , not cages. The world needs girls who know their worth- and sometimes, it takes a plane ticket to show them how much they can do.

I CAME BACK HOME WITH A TROPHY IN MY HAND. BUT THE REAL TREASURE WAS KNOWING: I CAN DO HARD THINGS. I CAN TRUST MYSELF. I CAN STAND ALONE.

AND SO CAN YOU.

IF THIS RESONATED WITH YOU , OR IF YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT SOLO TRAVEL- LEAVE A COMMENT. I WOULD LOVE TO CHEER YOU ON!
